sustain our water resources

Project Overview

The conditions of the California drought are the worst in history. Last year was one of the driest years on record for California in 500 years. What can we do to solve this dilemma?

In this project, 4th grade students will explore the drought dilemma. They will investigate the causes and effects of the issue, and develop methods to improve the situation in their local community. Throughout the project, students will write persuasive letters and advocate for a more sustainable California lifestyle. Additionally, students will learn about ways they can reduce their water footprint. As final products, students will produce a water conservation guide and PSA's to promote awareness to their community.

Essential question:

How can we sustain our water resources and reduce our water footprint?

Other questions:

Why is it important to live a more sustainable lifestyle?

How does the drought dilemma affect us and the habitats in CA?

How can we investigate and find a resolution to a dilemma and promote for change?

Student Work:

Students created a published book to inform others of how to conserve water. A student-led publishing team put the book together on CreateSpace.com

Students also created PSA videos using stop motion animation and filming techniques. These were showcased at the Vallecitos Water District Board Meeting and shown on the San Marcos Public Television.

To make both, students went through a series of drafts, revision and critique session to improve their work. They researched different topics about the drought and had to work in groups to develop a storyline for their movie.
